(This background combines both anime, cd drama, novels and games in my attempt to have it all make sense.)

Nanami grew up with his future lover, Shinichirou, and Aizawa, his future psychotic employer intent on ruining his life. Shinichirou, as a child, was subject to mood swings. He'd be happy one moment and almost violently angry the next. While scaring him, they also scared Nanami. Scared and intrigued. Nanami started studying psychology and multiple personality disorder in particular, as a direct result of Shinichirou's predicament. Aizawa was also interested in Shinichirou, but they both had very different ways of going about it. Nanami transferred to Aizawa's middle school, and they joined forces, starting to conduct experiments, all to help his friend Shinichirou. Ironically, it was in middle school that Nanami and Shinichirou drifted apart, separated by different schools.

Nanami and Aizawa began working together, or rather, Nanami worked for Aizawa, conducting experiments on innocent people, while Aizawa physically and emotionally abused him. The 'research' was on multiple personality disorder, using it as a springboard for mindcontrol and brainwashing. And of course, Aizawa threw some torture in there too. When Shinichirou and Nanami met up again, now years later, he was horrified. Shinichirou was so taken aback by the inhumanity of the project, that Nanami quit. Up until then, Nanami hadn't realized how awful Aizawa's research was. But life couldn't be that simple.

Nanami left Aizawa because of Shinichirou, realizing that what he was doing with Aizawa was wrong. Aizawa was a very obsessive person and did not tolerate something that he considered -his- to just leave. When Nanami 'runs away' on Aizawa, he takes it upon himself to 'kill' the parents of three children (Matsuri, Sunao and Sora) Nanami was close to. In actuality they were killed by Sora. (Right before Nanami left Aizawa for Shinichiriou, Aizawa raped him, and took the opportunity to collect DNA samples. Never being one to turn time a prime opportunity for science, Aizawa created a test tube baby with his own and Nanami's stolen DNA, Ren Shiina.

Nanami and Shinichirou lived a happy life with Matsuri, Sunao and Sora. But Aizawa couldn't have that. He couldn't live with Nanami being happy. He captured Sunao and Sora(Matsuri was spared because he was away at that time), who were then used as experiments and tortured, developing their own alternate personalities, Ran and Yoru in order to save their own minds.

Shinichirou and Nanami tried to rescue the two children, but when they were running, Sunao fell down and Shinichirou could only grab one. He grabbed Sora, who was closest, leaving Sunao behind.

Now working as the school nurse/doctor in an all boys school, with Shinichirou as the math teacher, Sunao pops up after all these years! Oh yeah, somewhere in between these years Nanami and Shinichirou got married. Aizawa toys with them some more, physically torturing them, drugging Nanami with medicine laced candy to break up their marriage. He's a great guy.

Knowing that Shinichirou was Nanami's love, Aizawa came up with a brilliant plan to cause Nanami yet more pain, using both Sora and Sunao. Controlling the two, Sunao/Ran and Sora/Yoru later stabs Shinichirou, intent on kidnapping him as well for his experiments on alternate personalities and control. Nanami walks into the room and rushes to Shinichirou's body, pleading for the two to stop. Sunao/Ran sets fire to the apartment and Sora and Nanami watch helplessly as it burns. But when the fire stops, there is no body! Shinichiroiu had disappeared. Now Sora and Nanami must stop Aizawa and bring back Shinichirou and Sunao if they can.

Aizawa's goal was the same, to ultimately cause Nanami pain for leaving him and his experiments. Having Shinichirou captured and experimented on under Aizawa gave Aizawa what he wanted, Nanami's intense sadness and pain. So. Nanami freaks out and tries to search for Shinichirou, no doubt while polishing every object and surface in the apartment.

While Kai is Nanami's first name, he hates being called it as Aizawa used to call him by that name. In addition, Aizawa hated Nanami so much he named his own son, Nagase Kai, after him. But, for his name, instead of using the regular kanji for 'Kai', he used the kanji for 'trash' instead.

Nanami's the school nurse and lover of Shinichirou Minato, the school's math teacher. Nanami also acts as a bit of a foster mother toward Sora.


Character personality:

Nanami may look sweet and innocent but he's a great deal more clever than he looks. He's not at all mean spirited, but he knows how to get what he wants without seemingly like he even ever wanted it. He's very subtle, despite being married to Shinichirou for eight years, he's never actually said 'I love you.' He can be very shy, and rather timid, especially with public displays of affection(not that this ever stops Shinichirou).

Most of the time Nanami puts others ahead of himself and his own well being. He's quite willingly let Minato-sensei(Shinichirou's more violent, cold, calculating alter) have his way with him than risk setting him on someone else. Simply put, because of his past, he just doesn't want to see anyone else hurt.. Nanami literally wouldn't hurt a fly. He changed after he left Aizawa, horrified and distraught over what he helped Aizawa accomplish and the part he played in it.

Nanami's a bit of a mother hen. He not only loves to cook, but he's quite good at it. In fact, he's good at most household duties, cooking, cleaning and the like. And he likes them. He's a good listener and very sweet and nice, but that doesn't mean he wont hit or punch Shinichirou when the need arises. Facing his past causes him a great deal of pain, and he considers all the horrors his friends and lover has been through to be entirely his fault, because he left Aizawa. Putting the blame on Aizawa, who was technically responsible for the torture, never entered his mind.

Imprisonment will not be good for Nanami. With his past abuse, he is quite emotionally fragile. Alone, and if ever separated from Shinichirou, the Warden may find it very easy to prod Nanami into doing whatever he wants. Without Shinichirou, Nanami is terrified he'll slip up, as if Shinichirou(and Minato to a certain extent) grounds him, his moral compass and protector from the world.

Physical description: While Nanami may be male, he doesn't look it. He's quite feminine, in both physical appearance and body language. He has light brown hair with a wisp that often curls upward on the top of his head. His hair is a little longer than shoulder length.

Magical powers or special skills: Nursing degree and quite a lot of psychology research on Multiple Personality Disorder
